Back to work for Animal Kingdom

05/11/2011 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Just four days after capturing the 137th Kentucky Derby, Animal Kingdom began preparations for the $1 million Preakness Stakes. The three-year-old colt took a jog at his Fair Hill Training Center home in Elkton, MD.

"He went out and jogged one mile with the pony with my assistant Dave Rock," trainer Graham Motion said. "He's super. Really good. Today has been a nice day. I'm trying to get back to normal. Well, some semblance of normalcy."

Animal Kingdom, owned by Team Valor and ridden by John Velazquez, arrived at Fair Hill on Tuesday afternoon from Churchill Downs. In the latest NTRA Three- year-old Poll the colt was a unanimous choice among the 19 voters as the top sophomore thoroughbred.

The 136th Preakness will go off on Saturday, May 21.

Of the 20 horses under consideration for the Preakness, seven are coming out of the Kentucky Derby along with 13 new competitors.

From the Run for the Roses, in addition to the champ, are runner-up Nehro, third-place finisher Mucho Macho Man, Dialed In, Midnight Interlude, Shackleford and Santiva.

The new names are Astrology, King Congie, Flashpoint, Mr. Commons, Norman Asbjornson, Ruler On Ice, Dance City, Sway Away, Concealed Identity, Casper's Touch, Isn't He Perfect, Harlan's Hello and Saratoga Red.

The Preakness field will be limited to 14. The first seven horses given preference by the highest lifetime earnings in graded stakes. The next four starters will be determined by the highest lifetime earnings in all "non- restricted stakes," which means those stakes whose conditions contain no restrictions other than age or sex. The remaining three starters will be determined by the highest lifetime earnings in all races.

Trainer Steve Asmussen had Nehro gallop a mile at Churchill Downs early Wednesday morning and Astrology walked the shedrow at Asmussen's barn at the Louisville track for a second day after working six-furlongs in 1:12.40 on Monday.

Dance City, third in the Arkansas Derby, galloped 1 1/2-miles Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the colt is scheduled to have his final work for the Preakness on Sunday before coming to Maryland next Wednesday.

Dialed In, eighth as the 5-1 Kentucky Derby favorite, jogged once around Churchill Downs Wednesday morning for trainer Nick Zito.

"The horse looks good," Zito said. "He came out of the race in good shape. We are looking forward to another trip to the Preakness." Zito won the 1996 Preakness with Louis Quatorze.

Santa Anita Derby winner Midnight Interlude, 16th in the Kentucky Derby, had a light gallop Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs under Peter Hutton, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert.

"It was lighter than usual," Hutton said. "We just back-tracked to the frontside and then galloped from the wire to the five-eighths pole."

Trainer Chris Grove had Norman Asbjornson gallop 1 1/2-miles Wednesday at the Bowie training center. The Gotham Stakes runner-up will breeze five-furlongs at Pimlico Friday morning.

"It will be another work over the track, possibly to put more speed back into him," Grove said. "It is not like they are going to go 1:09 next Saturday, but I want to put some speed back into him to get him fired up and ready to go.

"We have Friday to get through before we get really excited. It looks like we are in the field. He looks great and I couldn't ask for him to be doing any better. We have to worry about the gate because he can be difficult, but with some racing luck it could be a big weekend."

Santiva, second in the Risen Star Stakes, jogged once around the track at Churchill Downs shortly after it opened at 6 a.m. (et) with Brendan Walsh, assistant to trainer Eddie Kenneally.

"We just jogged a turn this morning," Walsh said of Santiva, who ran sixth in the Kentucky Derby. "He came out of the race great, but I don't know what they are doing with regard to the Preakness. We'll probably have an idea by the end of the week."

Shackleford, fourth in the Run for the Roses after setting most of the pace, jogged two miles at Churchill Downs shortly after 9:30 (et) Wednesday morning.

Sway Away, fourth in the Arkansas Derby, galloped 1 1/2-miles at Churchill Downs Wednesday before the morning renovation break. Trained by Jeff Bonde, the colt could work Saturday or Sunday, depending on weather.
